The boys worked really hard this week on completing their projects. The title they were given was " Women in History" and they had to chose a famous woman who made history for the first time. Some of the completed projects were spectacular crammed full of interesting facts and pictures. They ranged from Katie Taylor, to Mary Robinson and even further afield to Amelia Earhart. Have a look at their great work below.
Welcome to our Sixth Class blog here in St. Patrick's De La Salle B.N.S. in Castlebar Co. Mayo. This year we have 32 boys in our class and we also have the help of Olga our SNA. Our Learning Support teacher is Mr. Cogan and Mr.Canning is our E.A.L. teacher. We hope you enjoy visiting our blog over the school year! Stay posted for all our class news and events.

IZAK 9
For two weeks we have the opportunity to use the IZAK9 maths programme in our school. It's a fantastic resource which helps children to build skills, confidence and competence working as part of a team to solve problems and challenges. The boys use real cubes to solve the problems but they have to question themselves along the way! We can't wait to use it again this week.
In November we remember
This week we held a lovely prayer service in our classroom to reflect on those that we pray for during the month of November. We created a tree of remembrance and wrote the names of our loved ones and friends on leaves that we hung on the tree.
A Magnetic Race
To celebrate Science week we worked in groups to design our own racing game using the simple materials of magnets. Having studied the push and pull forces of magnets and the south and pole particles we used our knowledge to attach steel paper-clips to our constructed cars and using magnets underneath guided the cars around the track! We had lots of fun and it's something the boys could re-create at home some rainy day!
Dreamcatchers
Having studied the history of the Native Americans and their fight for independence we decided to bring one of their traditions to our classroom! Using a selection of fabrics and fibres along with lots of other bright and colourful materials we constructed dream catchers! The meaning behind a dream catcher is that it captures all your negative dreams and lets all your good dreams slide through the little holes! They came out really well- have a look at our pictures beneath!
Maths Stations
Every Friday we are using maths stations in our classroom. Last week was our first week and the boys had so much fun! We have 5 stations set up with different activities at each group. Some of these activities are snap cards, maths box, fraction dominoes, loop cards, independent maths challenges, Interactive games on the whiteboard and finally a teacher led station focusing on solving word problems! Well done boys on all your hard work!

Fearless Winter Owls
Today we worked on owls using charcoals and oil pastels. We focused on the huge eyes of the owl and added feathers and beaks. We tried to use a variety of strokes to create the soft texture and used lots of finger movements to blend the colours together. We focused on control in using charcoals by lifting our hands off the sheet and drawing in big sweeping strokes from our shoulder and wrist. We wanted to create blurred lines and less definition and colour was keep to only one feature of the owl! The finished artwork was superb!
Magnetic experiments
This week we were busy studying the properties of magnets and how magnetism can have the push and pull force depending on the north and south pole location. We examined the four main magnets- horseshoe, bar, round, disc and used them in class experiments. We also experimented with a selection of materials to measure the magnetic strength of different magnets and whether this differed depending on the magnet side. We had lots of fun and are looking forward to our next magnetic adventure-stay tuned to see what's coming next!
Re-think your drink!
What you drink makes a bigger difference to your health than you might think! Energy and sports drinks along with popular fizzy drinks are loaded with sugar. We looked at the effects of too much sugar in your diet and how they can lead to lots of different health problems. Sometimes we are rushing and grab the nearest drink to hand but we looked a little closer at the labels on some of these drinks and we were in for some sugar shockers!! Have a look at our results below and it might help you too to re-think your drink!
